A new season is dawning on Vancouver and with it arrives more markets, film, art, and music festivals galore. Check out what’s happening this September.

Kitsilano Farmers Market: From now until October, every Sunday the parking lot of Kitsilano Community Centre is filled with 50+ farms and producers. Find just-picked seasonal fruits and vegetables, eggs, dairy, ethically raised meat, fresh baked goods, and more.

Bard on the Beach: The Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival opens its 29th Season in Vanier Park with Shakespeare’s Macbeth, directed by Chris Abraham in his directorial debut at Bard on the Beach. This year’s production of Macbeth features celebrated Canadian actors Ben Carlson as Macbeth and Moya O’Connell as Lady Macbeth. Also sharing the BMO Mainstage is the ‘60s- inspired, Beatles-infused production of As You Like It directed by Citadel Theatre’s Artistic Director Daryl Cloran. Lysistrata and Timon of Athens will be taking the Howard Family Stage.

Ayumi Goto and Peter Morin: how do you carry the land? At the Vancouver Art Gallery: Toronto-based artist Ayumi Goto (of the traditional territories of the Mississaugas of the New Credit, the Haudenosaunee, the Anishinaabe and the Huron-Wendat), and Peter Morin have created a “performance art practice informed by their perspectives as a Japanese diasporic woman and Tahltan First Nations man. Together, Goto and Morin investigate their distinctive relationships to place in this presentation of new installations and reassembled documentation from their individual and collaborative performances over the past six years.”

Poly Queer Love Ballad at the Vancouver Fringe: “Poly Queer Love Ballad is a bold, intimate new musical, merging slam poetry with catchy pop-folk tunes.  Nina, a polyamorous bisexual poet, meets Gabbie, a monogamous lesbian songwriter, at a Cafe Deux Soleils. With two microphones, a loop pedal, and array of instruments, they struggle to reconcile their fierce mutual attraction with their opposing perspectives on love.”

Liberation Wednesdays: Engage in discussions about how best to serve womxn in our community! A space for womxn and trans, genderqueer, genderfluid, femme, and non-binary people for their voices and experiences to be heard.

Vancouver Fringe Festival: Over 11 days in September, nearly 100 theatre artists and companies have over 700 performances attracting 40,000+ attendees. The Fringe is known for making theatre for everyone and breaking down traditional theatre boundaries. Come out and support this local festival and talent!

Traveltheatrics at the Vancouver Fringe: Traveltheatrics is a storytelling show featuring 6 TRUE tales from across the globe, from the mountains of Malaysia to the medinas in Morocco.

SKOOKUM Festival: Go to Stanley Park for this three-day music festival headlined by the Killers, X Ambassadors, and Florence + the Machine. With talent from around the world, Canada, and even our own city, SKOOKUM promises a weekend to remember.

RESILIENCE iAM the gala: Come together for human equality and to end violence against women.  All proceeds from the event go towards the RIA Fund, a financial aid for women facing immediate circumstances of violence. Death, Resurrection, Ascension: This feature length art film documents an organic an and unscripted process of psychedelic plant medicine. Comprised entirely of security camera documentation, the story illustrates women engaged in a ritual for the healing of sexual trauma.

Nigredo Hotel: City Opera Vancouver’s macabre, operatic jazz thriller Nigredo Hotel is a one-act chamber opera. It tells the tale of an encounter between a beautiful but crazed hotelier and a brain surgeon who seeks refuge after a traumatic car accident. The opera is directed by Alan Corbishley, with music by Nic Gotham, and libretto by world-renowned author and playwright Ann-Marie MacDonald.

Aida Cuevas: Hailed as the “Queen of Mariachi,” Aida Cuevas opens the Chan Centre’s 2018/2019 season. Joined by her band Mariachi Juvenil Tecalitlán, Cuevas is legendary in a typically male-dominated mariachi genre. Check out this enticing night!

Chan Centre Presents I’m With Her: Don’t forget to snag your tickets for I’m With Her. This Grammy Award-winning folk supergroup, made up of Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, and Aoife O’Donovan is kicking off the Canadian leg of the band’s tour right here in Vancouver.
