The editorial team at Loose Lips Mag is small but mighty, and not everything that ends up in our inbox makes it to the magazine. In order to show some love to all of the woman-powered events happening in our city, we introduce The Marquee: a monthly roundup of arts and culture happenings in Vancouver.

Here’s what’s happening in May.

Disco Dumplings: A self-explanatory evening of dumplings n’ disco paired with a bevy of natural wines.

Spiritual Activism 101: Hosted by the inimitable Rachel Ricketts, join in on an evening of connection, conversation, and learning in support of underrepresented voices. Partial proceeds will go to (WOC) Women of Colour talks.

EMMA Talks: Feminist Muslim Voices: Featuring, Dr. Amina Wadud, Feminist Voices facilitates a dialogue with Maisaloon Al-Ashkar, Hannah Ali, and Sarah Munawar and Opening Quran recitation by Seemi Ghazi and “discusses the real possibility of a feminism that can find refuge in religion and how the erasure of feminism from the Islamic tradition has informed their experience of gender and spirituality.”  The evening will MC’d by Amal Rana.

DOXA Documentary Film Festival 2018: Devoted to presenting independent and innovative documentaries to Vancouver audiences for 17 years, the DOXA Documentary Film Festival is a curated and juried festival comprised of public screenings, panel discussions, public forums and educational programs.  Festival pass $195, check Doxafestival.ca for individual screenings or ticket packs.

An Indigenous Transgender Journey Through Colonialism: The Gender Vectors project invites you to an evening of storytelling with Cree Two-Spirited activist, Jack Saddleback. Jack captivates his audience by sharing his message of Embracing Two Spirits, Conquering Mental Health, and Finding Ones Identity. This event is held on stolen and occupied Indigenous land belonging to the Coast Salish Peoples. This includes the territories of the Musqueam, Skxwú7mesh-ulh, Stó:lo & Tsleil-Waututh nations. Feel The Burn: A Boxing + Breathwork Session For Battling Burnout: Take part in a fully integrated workout and wellness workshop, co-presented by boxing trainer and co-founder of All City Athletics, Anna Farrant, and intuitive wellness coach, spiritual activist and founder of loss&found, Rachel Ricketts. Dedicated to those working to avoid burnout and exhaustion, this workshop promises to take you through a moving meditation to cleanse and re- calibrate your mind, body and spirit.

Ballet BC Program 3: You don’t want to miss this sensational season closer! Program 3 includes the return of resident Choreographer Cayetano Soto’s eerie and memorable piece BEGINNING AFTER and a world premiere of new work by Artistic Director Emily Molnar in collaboration with conductor Graeme Langager and Vancouver’s Phoenix Chamber Choir.

Mama Mia: The Arts Club presents the smash-hit, globally known musical Mama Mia based on the famous tunes by ABBA.

P!NK: This rose-headed chanteuse was the epitome of the feminist millenium with her debut song “Can’t Take Me Home” and its album of the same name in the year 2000. 18 years later, she’s still singing the female experience and bringing it right here to Vancouver.

The 2018 Expressions Theatre Festival: Arts Umbrella’s Intensive, Pre-Professional and Theatre Conservatory Programs showcase their talented young artists in an annual festival including productions like Oklahoma! And Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

rEvolver Theatre Festival: Presented by Upintheair Theatre the 6th annual rEvolver Theatre Festival features a sophisticated, adventurous, and innovative program of new works by distinct voices from across the Canadian live theatre scene. Enjoy 11 mainstage shows over 11 days, touching on hard-hitting contemporary concerns in unexpected ways with offbeat, smart, and comedic productions. Tix $20/15.

Indigenous Brilliance: May 25th Reading: This quarterly reading series, hosted in collaboration by Room Magazine and Massy Books, creates space for Indigenous Brilliance. The evening invites First Nations, Métis, and Inuit women/2SQ writers to showcase their beautiful (and badass) work.

The Art and Science of Fermented Vegetable Pickles with Lauren Elbe: Hosted by Nectar Juicery, spend your Thursday evening learning about the art of fermentation and embracing local seasonal vegetables. You will leave this course with an understanding of how to ferment your own vegetables, a 1L jar of your own custom blended creation to ferment from your home and a step by step recipe for home-fermentation.
