Summer is here! Celebrate the sunshine by heading out for a show, festival, market, or event in our gorgeous city. Here’s what’s happening this month in Vancouver.

Matilda: “Sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty to find your happy ending! Armed with an outsize wit and a vivid imagination, precocious Matilda takes a stand to change her destiny. Even cruel parents and a hardened headmistress can’t get in her way. From the wonderfully subversive imagination of Roald Dahl, this fun family musical will bring out the child in everyone.”

2019 Vancouver International Children’s Festival: Head down to Granville Island for Vancouver’s iconic International Children’s Festival. Enjoy performances from around the world, including acrobatics, puppetry, theatre, dance, circus, music, and more!

House of Vans (4-day pop up): House of Vans pop-up experience will host a number of exciting activities including FREE live music performances, a custom indoor skatepark, art exhibits, a community market, games, and workshops such as “Get on Board: a celebration of women’s skateboarding.” The initiative invites women of all ages to participate in on-site skate clinics, inspiring a new wave of women’s skateboarding progression.

Vancouver Writers Fest Book Sale Spectacular: Come pick up a book! Edge of the Knife: “Shot entirely on the remote, beautiful BC island of Haida Gwaii, Edge of the Knife (“SGaawaay K’uuna”), is the first feature-length narrative film spoken entirely in the Haida language – one that is so endangered, with less than 20 fluent speakers, that a dialect coach was needed. With its roots in mythical, supernatural folklore, First Nations filmmakers Gwaai Edenshaw and Helen Haig-Brown’s film about pride, tragedy, and penance is the product of a community initiative with strong support from the Haida people, as well as from the Council of the Haida Nation.”

Women Deliver 2019 Conference: “The Women Deliver 2019 Conference (#WD2019) will be the world’s largest conference on gender equality and the health and rights of girls and women in the 21st century. It will serve as a catalyst for advocates working to achieve a more gender equal world. More than 7,000 world leaders, influencers, advocates, academics, activists, and journalists will flock to Vancouver with the drive to accelerate progress for girls and women everywhere. The conference is a platform for people and organizations from around the world to present new knowledge, promote world-class solutions, and engage a broad spectrum of voices.”

Feelosophy: Join Feelosophy for an hour of restorative yoga with hands-on touch. Using massage-based adjustments, this yoga is a space to slow down and feel.

Because We Are Girls: You won’t want to miss this important screening headlining DOXA’s 2019 festival. “A conservative Indo-Canadian family in Williams Lake, British Columbia must come to terms with a devastating secret: three sisters were sexually abused by an older relative beginning in their childhood years. After remaining silent for nearly two and a half decades, the sisters decide to come forward — not only to protect other young relatives, but also to set an example for their own daughters. Mom’s the Word- Nest 1/2 Empty: “From the world-renowned creative team behind the Mom’s the Word series comes another chapter in their stories of family and fracas. Join in for a half-day seminar on intersectionality, feminist history, emotional health, and more.
