Skyborn: A Land Reclamation Odyssey: A black hole, hungry ghosts, a Grandmother wolf—Quelemia Sparrow’s Skyborn is an epic odyssey grounded in Indigenous ancestral knowledge. Guided through the universe on a river made of stars, Sparrow makes a journey by canoe to recover her lost soul from the land of the dead. This adventure is deeply rooted in the cosmology and teachings of her Musqueam heritage.

PuSh International Performing Arts Festival: Three-week festival presents emotionally honest, politically daring program of visually arresting dance, eclectic music, and genre-crossing theatre. Featuring 27 works from 24 companies from nine countries — including six world premieres — the festival line-up is dedicated to creative risk-taking and dynamic interdisciplinary collaboration. PuSh 2020 is a poignant reminder of art’s power to bring communities together and effect change.

Black History Month: Harriet: “Surviving under slavery in 1840s Maryland, Minty Ross (Cynthia Erivo in a powerful, Oscar-nominated performance) escapes and finds her way across 100 miles to freedom in Philadelphia, and takes up her free name: Harriet Tubman. Kasi Lemmons’ film about the Underground Railroad is an object lesson in creating accessible, direct, emotional cinematic drama from the stark bones of history.”

Vancouver Poetry Slam Featuring Nisha Patel: Watch as multiple poets take the stage in open mic and curated rounds, with a special feature from award-winning Indo-Canadian poet and artist Nisha Patel.

The Year of Black Healing: Vancouver Edition: The three day series will run as follows: February 3, Decolonizing the Museum with artist Grace Ndiritu; February 5, African Centered Healing Modalities with psychotherapist Aziz Popoola; February 7, Exercises in Radical Presence with artist Guadalupe Martinez.

Decolonizing Voices: A Celebration of Canadian Black HERstory: “MOA pays tribute to the contributions of Black Canadian Womxn with an evening of academic and artistic performances. The night features readings and artist talks from award-winning spoken word artist, Adelene da Soul Poet (Bertha Clark); artist, poet and award-winning educator, Chantal Gibson; and founder and director of BlackArt Gastown, Nya Lewis. Each of these womxn will explore how we can decolonize institutional prejudice and evaluate how colonialism has woven its way into our everyday lives through their own unique perspectives and forms of artistic and intellectual expression.”

Artists’ Tour: Debra Sparrow and Cease Wyss: “Join artists Debra Sparrow and Cease Wyss for an in-gallery discussion of their works on view in ‘Transits and Returns.’ Both artists will speak to ideas of presence, continuity and Indigenous approaches to learning. Their tour will hold space for dialogues around key concepts explored in the exhibition, including kinship, being in motion and situatedness.”

VIFF Ignite: The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open: “Discovering Rosie (Violet Nelson), a pregnant teenager, sobbing on a rainy East Vancouver street, Aila (Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers) swiftly intercedes, initially offering shelter before working feverishly to get her access to proper support networks. Unfolding in real time, this deft drama from Tailfeathers and Kathleen Hepburn (Never Steady, Never Still) employs a riveting combination of intimacy and immediacy as these two Indigenous women forge a tentative bond and embark on a revelatory odyssey.”

Melanin Mixer Presents In Full Bloom: “A mindful gathering and day brunch honouring and celebrating the lives and stories of self-identifying black wxmen. This event begins with a gentle beginner’s self-love yoga flow led by Melissa Nkomo, followed by a live music guided meditation by Desiree Dawson and Dora Kamau. DanceHouse Presents Grupo Corpo: An energizing, two-part program from Brazil’s iconic contemporary dance company Grupo Corpo with the Vancouver premiere of Dança Sinfônica and Gira, which explores the rituals of Umbanda—one of Brazil’s most widespread religions—in a carnal meditation on humanity’s pursuit for divine enlightenment.
