The start of 2019 was packed with films, performances, markets, and more. Continuing the trend, February has a full list of culture and womxn-focused events! Check out what’s happening in Vancouver this month.

This is the Point: “A play about love, sex, and disability. This is the Point is a joyous and unflinching portrait of four individuals whose lives have been shaped, in part, by cerebral palsy.”

Annie: The Musical: Come out to watch this classic rendition of the plucky, curly-haired orphan Annie! This heartwarming story is the perfect start to February. Date: February 1 – 16

Jingles and Sounds for Speaking to our Grandmothers: “Through a series of performances at the 2018 Seattle Art Fair, Hupfield and Vickers activated their [jingle] cone to explore its musical potential, communicate with each other, and converse with their grandmothers. This exhibition brings together documentation of the performances in Seattle, the jingle cone itself, and a new series of drawings made from the original performance costumes.”

Winter Wander 2019: This family fun event includes admission to: Museum of Vancouver, H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, Vancouver Maritime Museum, City of Vancouver Archives, and Vancouver Academy of Music! In addition, experience unique waterfront attractions and performances from Bard on the Beach and the Vancouver Academy of Music.

Paint with a Brush for a Flourishing Lunar New Year: “Join artist Meng Xiaoping as he talks about 6000-year-old Chinese brush painting and demonstrates the basic skills of using a Chinese calligraphy brush. Paint your first Chinese plum blossom for the upcoming Year of the Pig, a year of prosperity.”

Fragile Forms: “Inspired by world-renowned Finnish theorist and architect Juhani Pallasmaa’s writings on architecture and the sensing body, MACHiNENOiSY’s most ambitious work to date is a site-specific, 360-degree contemporary dance performance tailored specifically for New Westminster’s iconic Anvil Centre. This adventurous piece brings together architecture; sound, visual and lighting design; and a team of extraordinary dancers from both Canada and Finland—all to stunning effect.”

Rafiki: As part of Black History Month at Vancity Theatre, Rafiki tells the story of queer romance. Initially banned in Kenya for its LGBT portrayal, the movie went on to win a Supreme Court case against the country’s anti-LGBT legislation.

Edge of the Knife: “Shot entirely on the remote, beautiful BC island of Haida Gwaii, Edge of the Knife (SGaawaay K’uuna), is the first feature-length narrative film spoken entirely in the Haida language – one that is so endangered, with less than 20 fluent speakers, that a dialect coach was needed. Set in the 19th century, the film follows protagonist Adiits’ii, who is mentally and physically pushed to the brink of survival and becomes the supernatural being Gaagiixiid/Gaagiid – the Haida Wildman.”

Don’t Be Nice: “A team of young New York City Slam Poets finds its voice as it competes for the National Championship during the summer of 2016. Melanin Mixer Volume 2: “A night dedicated to women of colour. A celebration. An appreciation. A showcase.” Join Werklab for a night to remember. The night will begin with a Shapes and Sounds session by Desiree Dawson, followed by a panel discussion compromised of local WOC.
