The Sunday of summer has arrived and with it comes new festivals, markets, exhibitions, and events to check out. Here’s what’s happening in Vancouver this August.

Bard on the Beach: The Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival opens its 29th Season in Vanier Park with Shakespeare’s Macbeth, directed by Chris Abraham in his directorial debut at Bard on the Beach. This year’s production of Macbeth features celebrated Canadian actors Ben Carlson as Macbeth and Moya O’Connell as Lady Macbeth. Also sharing the BMO Mainstage is the ‘60s- inspired, Beatles-infused production of As You Like It directed by Citadel Theatre’s Artistic Director Daryl Cloran. Lysistrata and Timon of Athens will be taking the Howard Family Stage.

Theatre Under The Stars: This year, TUTS presents Rodgers & Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA and 42nd Street! Gear up for a magical summer, with two outstanding productions under the stars in Stanley Park’s iconic Malkin Bowl.

Pier Yoga: Hosted by lululemon, enjoy free yoga every Wednesday evening on the Burrard Dry Docks this summer!

Ayumi Goto and Peter Morin: How do you carry the land? At the Vancouver Art Gallery: Toronto-based artist Ayumi Goto (of the traditional territories of the Mississaugas of the New Credit, the Haudenosaunee, the Anishinaabe and the Huron-Wendat), and Peter Morin have created a “performance art practice informed by their perspectives as a Japanese diasporic woman and Tahltan First Nations man. Together, Goto and Morin investigate their distinctive relationships to place in this presentation of new installations and reassembled documentation from their individual and collaborative performances over the past six years.”

Kitsilano Farmers Market: Every Sunday from now until October, the parking lot of Kitsilano Community Centre is filled with 50+ farmers and producers. Find just-picked seasonal fruits and vegetables, eggs, dairy, ethically-raised meat, fresh baked goods, and more.

Downtown Farmer’s Market: Ditch the grocery store and head to this weekly summer market for your locally grown fresh produce, eggs, dairy, ethically-raised meat, plant-based foods and more. Bonus, come for happy hour and jam to the live music put on by the Downtown Market Concert Series!

Evo Summer Cinema Series:  Join in on the last 3 screenings this summer in Stanley Park’s outdoor cinema series! All movies were chosen by the general public and promise to deliver a feature film experience under the stars. Fun and festivities start early and continue on until the movie begins.

Honda Celebration of Light: This highly anticipated annual series of fireworks is returning to Vancouver! Enjoy music performances, food trucks, and spectacular light displays. Choose your pick or come for both!

From K.D. to J.D: A Queer Trivia Night + Fundraiser: A perfect opportunity to indulge your trivia cravings and help the BC Cancer Foundation.  Come out for a special event that features diverse topics and a night of entertainment.

2018 Trans, Two Spirit, Genderqueer, Intersex March: Join in for a march that aims to celebrate Pride and raise awareness on issues such as violence, bullying, erasure from social histories, harassment, and discrimination by public institutions.

42nd Annual Powell Street Festival: Come out for Canada’s largest celebration of Japanese Canadian arts and culture in Vancouver’s historic Japanese Canadian neighbourhood. Highlights include live music, food, sumo wrestling, literary events, dance, film, martial arts, anime, and more!

Vancouver Street Dance Festival: The largest outdoor street-dance festival in the northwest is back for its 7th year.  Watch or participate in dance battles, workshops, and performances all day at Robson Square! In addition, there will be DJ’s, live music, and community booths and vendors.

Strathcona Artisan Market: Originally “started as an idea to empower low-income artists in the Strathcona/Downtown Eastside neighbourhood to seek ways to turn their creativity and talent into sustainable income source,” this is the second year of the Strathcona Artisan Market. Enjoy handmade goods, locally made food, Buskers Music Festival, art workshops, and kids activities.

Pride Parade: “A celebration. A protest. A party. A place to take up space. An opportunity to don our finest and shiniest. A chance to recognize how far we have come and reflect on where we need to go from here.”  This year’s 40th Annual Pride Parade is an open invitation to all of Vancouver to come and celebrate diversity. You don’t want to miss out on this day of festivities!

Sunset Beach Festival: Celebrate Pride well into the evening at the Sunset Beach Festival.  Starting before the Pride Parade, the festival includes performances, a family fun zone, and lots to eat and drink.

Meeting Venus in the Studio: Join Alfred DePew, a migrant cultural worker, as he delves into the different ways of working with this powerful archetype’s many contradictory moods. Vines Art Festival: “Vines Art Festival is an accessible community-oriented event for artists and the public to deepen their connections to each other on beautiful Coast Salish landscape through environmental and social justice art.” Come out to witness a display of disciplines and cultures with thought-provoking art for all ages, genders, and cultures.

Screening: c̓əsnaʔəm, the city before the city: Through the voices of the Musqueam First Nation, c̓əsnaʔəm, the city before the city shares deeply-rooted community knowledge of Musqueam’s living culture and ongoing relationship with their ancestral and unceded territory now known as metro Vancouver.” The film highlights the moment in 2011 when Musqueam First Nation learned of a 108-unit condo development that was being planned on their ancestral village sites without consideration or warning.

International Federation of Research in Women’s History Conference:  The 12th Conference of the International Federation for Research on Women’s History is focused on “Transnationalisms, Transgressions, Translations: Conversations and Controversies”. This provoking theme is certain to spark rich conversation and powerful change.

Vancouver Queer Film Festival:  As the second largest film festival and largest queer arts event in Western Canada, Vancouver Queer Film Festival is a unique community event. For 11 days this August, catch films, watch performances, and join in on workshops, panel discussions, parties, and more. With over 70 films from 15 countries, this year’s festival is bound to be incredible.

Vancouver Outsiders Arts Festival: The second annual Vancouver Outsider Arts Festival offers “visual and performing artists facing social exclusion and other barriers opportunities for exhibition and sales, performance and participation, connection and learning.” Come out for all that VOAF has to offer!

Vancouver Gem and Mineral Show: A dazzling weekend featuring western Canada’s largest gem show with 60+ of the bst gem, mineral, and jewellery vendors from across the country. Find unique gems, fine crystals, rare fossils, handmade jewellery, and more!

Women in Animation Vancouver Summit: Kicking off the first ever Women in Animation Vancouver Summit is the topic of inclusion. Come out for this free opportunity to learn, network, and enjoy hearing from leading national and international speakers.

Vancouver Mural Festival: The third annual Vancouver Mural Festival is returning this August. With a focus on diverse local and regional artists, the alleyways of Vancouver are transformed. Paired with live art, multiple stages, markets, street dance battles, graffiti jams, and a craft beer garden, you do not want to miss out on this event!

Broken: Broken explores the story of Simone Orlando, Ballet BC’s lead dancer for 12 years, as she navigated life as a dedicated dancer in crisis. After facing a career-threatening injury, Orlando was forced to reevaluate her life’s work and identity. Come out and watch this never-before-seen look at the behind the scenes of Orlando and Ballet BC.
