The editorial team at Loose Lips Mag is small but mighty, and not everything that ends up in our inbox makes it to the magazine. In order to show some love to all of the woman-powered events happening in our city, we introduce The Marquee: a monthly roundup of arts and culture happenings in Vancouver.

Here’s what’s happening in April.

Beginning with the Seventies: GLUT exhibition: GLUT celebrates an overflowing archive of art and activism from the ’70s in Vancouver. One part of its four-component exhibit is the Rereading Room – one of the most provocative exhibits in the history of the Belkin Gallery.

The Fabric of Our Land: Salish Weaving:  Curated by Susan Rowley in collaboration with Salish weavers, this exhibition at The Museum of Anthropology (MOA) at UBC takes visitors on a journey through the past 200 years of Salish wool weaving.

Yoko Ono’s MEND PIECE: MEND PIECE illustrates Ono’s long standing artistic quest in social activism and world peace.The exhibit transforms the historic Wing Sang building at the Rennie museum into an “intimate space for creative expression [that] brings people together in an act of collective healing and meditation.”

Capture Photography Festival: An annual not-for-profit festival that offers a string of events, public installations and exhibits in various locations across the city.

Kate Nash: Nash is touring in support of her upcoming  album release Yesterday Was Forever.
Date: April 4

WTF?! Am I Doing- A Workshop For Decision Making: Feeling indecisive? Brain on overdrive? Make a decision and stick to it!

Cécile Doo-Kingué: Spend the evening listening to a blend of blues, rock, folk and Afro-roots care of  Cécile Doo-Kingué, one of Canada’s most versatile guitarists.

Vancouver International Burlesque Festival presents the International Cabaret: Prepare for an unforgettable weekend of glitz and glamour! The VIBF at the Vancouver Playhouse brings you burlesque talent from coast to coast and beyond. These unforgettable acts will showcase the wide world of burlesque… right here in Vancouver! Guaranteed to dazzle and delight.

Screen Saver Club: Join the next Screen Saver Club with special guest Emily Best, the founder and CEO of film-centric crowdfunding platform Seed&Spark, as she discusses the opportunities that crowdfunding offers to independent creators and how representation matters in all types of storytelling.

Here & There: A joint exhibition of Alexa Mazzarello’s series Not Home and Andrea Fernandez’s series As Long As You Keep Your Eyes Open Wide, exploring ideas of space, memory, familiarity, solitude, and the comforts in between.  Here & There is part of the Capture Photography Festival.

Sophia Danai Music Video Release “Come Thru”: Join the party for the unveiling of Sophia Danai’s music video for “Come Thru,” the first single off her upcoming EP Real Lies. Sophia will perform an intimate set of her unreleased songs and there will be a special guest DJ.

An Evening With Grace-Feminism and Business: If you aren’t familiar with Grace Club already it’s somewhat of an anti-club, curated for feminists by Maggie Anderson and Tavia Cosper. This next event is featuring a spectacular lineup of speakers: JoAnn Fowler, Makenzie Chilton, Louise Green and our friend Jacqueline Jennings.

Heart of a Dog: Visionary multimedia artist Laurie Anderson tells a dreamlike tale of loss and love, primarily starring her beloved rat terrier, Lolabelle. Narrated by Anderson and dedicated to her late husband Lou Reed, the documentary muses about trauma and grief, relationships with loved ones, and the fragility of life—all with a poetic, rather sublime intonation. Super 8 footage as well as original art and animation are interspersed throughout Anderson’s profound yet relatable series of thoughts.

Daymé Arocena: Join Afro-Cuban neo-soul singer Daymé Arocena and Havana-born piano virtuoso Roberto Fonseca in an exhilarating co-bill. These shining talents who draw from Cuba’s storied musical tradition will each ignite the stage – Arocena with her intoxicating vocals – offering a fresh and modern take on the styles rooted in their Caribbean home country.

11th Annual Nifty for Fifty Indie Designer Sale: Over 30 local designers are offering deep discounts at the 11th annual one-day Nifty for Fifty sale where all items are priced at $50 or less. It’s a great opportunity to meet local, independent designers where everything from jewelry, clothing, accessories, sketchbooks to pottery is on sale.  Be sure to bring cash as many designers will only accept cash for payment.

Her Stories: A Simple Life (presented by Mina Shum): VIFF is launching  a new series of inspiring cinema directed by women, and selected by women filmmakers called Her Stories. The sensational Mina Shum will be presenting A Simple Life – a portrait of an elderly maid retiring after 60 years of service.

Laurie Anderson: All the Things I Lost in the Flood Pre-Show Talk: This exclusive, sold-out evening with one of America’s most prolific avant-garde multimedia artists – whose career spans four decades – will incorporate spoken word, video, live music and electronics to investigate the power and perils of language and storytelling. Author and UBC lecturer Dina Del Bucchia looks at the impact and influence that Laurie Anderson has had on the literary world, while giving her own insight into expression, creative practice, and how artists ultimately arrive in places that allow them to create. Persistence of Vision 28 Film Festival: Celebrate the diverse and multicultural storytelling of UBC’s third- and fourth-year student short films. Such countries as Ecuador, Japan, Mexico, France, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong are represented and 50 per cent of the key creatives are women.
