The editorial team at Loose Lips Mag is small but mighty, and not everything that ends up in our inbox makes it to the magazine. In order to show some love to the events happening in our city, we introduce The Marquee: a monthly roundup of arts and culture happenings in Vancouver.

Summer is here and the city is buzzing with festivals, outdoor cinemas, markets, and more. Here’s what’s happening in July.

Mama Mia: The Arts Club presents the smash-hit, globally known musical Mama Mia based on the famous tunes by ABBA.

Bard on the Beach: The Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival opens its 29th Season in Vanier Park with Shakespeare’s Macbeth, directed by Chris Abraham in his directorial debut at Bard on the Beach. This year’s production of Macbeth features celebrated Canadian actors Ben Carlson as Macbeth and Moya O’Connell as Lady Macbeth. Also sharing the BMO Mainstage is the ‘60s- inspired, Beatles-infused production of As You Like It directed by Citadel Theatre’s Artistic Director Daryl Cloran. Lysistrata and Timon of Athens will be taking the Howard Family Stage.

Wild Things: The Power of Nature in Our Lives: Don’t miss this new exhibition presented by the   Museum of Vancouver (MOV) and Nature Vancouver. Co-curated by Viviane Gosselin, Director of Collections & Exhibitions at MOV and Lee Beavington of Nature Vancouver, this immersive exhibition “delves into the life stories of local animals and plants—how they relate to each other and how they connect people to nature in the city. Scenic design, videos, taxidermy, crowd-sourcing technologies, and the display of natural specimens breathe life into these tales of co-habitation.” Share your experience digitally using the hashtags #WildThings #MOVNatureAndMe.

Latin American Film Night with VIFF: Latincouver has partnered with the Vancouver International Film Festival to present a celebration of the Latin American film industry. In addition to the two films screened  at the Vancity Theatre, duo Mara Coelho will play an acoustic set of authentic rhythms from Brazil such as Samba, Chorus, and Bossanova. The films screened will have English subtitles, admission is 19+.

Women’s Voices in the Americas: This filmmakers panel gives a different lense on intercultural perspectives, using works created by women as a launch pad for conversation. Speakers include Ana Cruz Navarro of Mexico, and Marilyn Norry and Jill Sharpe from Canada.

Theatre Under The Stars: This year, TUTS presents Rodgers & Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA and 42nd Street! Gear up for a magical summer, with two outstanding productions under the stars in Stanley Park’s iconic Malkin Bowl.

Downtown Farmer’s Market: Ditch the grocery store and head to this weekly summer market for your locally grown fresh produce, eggs, dairy, ethically raised meat, plant-based foods and more.

The Dancing on Edge Festival: Check out Canada’s longest running festival, celebrating 30 years of contemporary dance at various venues in Vancouver.  This year showcases over thirty performances involving more than thirty innovative choreographers with artists from across Canada, Belgium and South Korea.

2018 Khatsahlano Street Party: The annual Khatsahlano Street Party returns to West 4th Avenue! This event spans from from Burrard to MacDonald for 10 blocks of live music, vendors, food and more.

Carnaval Del Sol 10 Year Anniversary: The Biggest Latin American Festival in the Pacific Northwest, celebrating 10 years of Latin American Culture in Vancouver. Enjoy two full days of live music, art, dance, sports, and poetry!

Ayumi Goto and Peter Morin: how do you carry the land? At the Vancouver Art Gallery: Toronto-based artist Ayumi Goto (of the traditional territories of the Mississaugas of the New Credit, the Haudenosaunee, the Anishinaabe and the Huron-Wendat), and Peter Morin have created a “performance art practice informed by their perspectives as a Japanese diasporic woman and Tahltan First Nations man. Together, Goto and Morin investigate their distinctive relationships to place in this presentation of new installations and reassembled documentation from their individual and collaborative performances over the past six years.”

Spiritual Activism 101: An Evening of Conversation, Connection and Education for Racial Justice:  “It’s 2018 and racism and misogyny are still every.damn.where. How do we address and heal from them? What can we do to be part of the solution?” If you haven’t had a chance to attend one of Rachel Ricketts’ Spiritual Activism workshops, now is your chance and this time it’s on Gibsons! This evening and workshop  is open to all walks of life, especially white folks who want to learn how they can better support people of colour and for those who are “seeking spiritual tools and practices to assist in committing to anti-racism.”

Slide Show 6: A Night of Improvised Powerpoint Comedy: What exactly is Powerpoint Comedy you ask? Basically, it’s everyone’s worst nightmare! Six-slide shows and six performers make up presentations on-the-spot to go with PowerPoint slideshows they’ve never seen before. Do not miss this evening, produced by Stacey McLachlan (who also hosts the evening!)  and Max Mitchell, in association with Blind Tiger Comedy.
