Where: La Mezcaleria-Gastown (68 E Cordova Street)
Hair of the dog: This place is plentiful with booze so come ready to get a brunch buzz. We opted for two personal favourites: a citrus packed lime margarita on the rocks, $11, and of course we made it a Mezcal Margarita (+$2) and later, an Airhorn (tropical, bubbly, dangerous), $12.
What we ate: Let this be known: we did not hold back. To start, because it’s never too early for cheese, we shared the Quesito Fundido: bubbling hot queso, served in a volanic stone bowl and tortillas on the side. Also a happy hour favourite for $8. Next up, the Ceviche Callejero, $12: seasonal fresh (big accent on the fresh) fish, cured in lime and cilantro, and paired with a hearty bowl of guac.
The taco obsession is real, and of course we needed to indulge. Our next course: an Al Pastor taco, $7, and De Carne Asada, $7.
To balance our meal with a classic brunch item we finished with the Pan francés, $13. Brioche French toast loaded with fresh bananas, strawberries, dark rum, decadent dulce de leche, and fluffy Chantilly.
What we loved: This gorgeous Gastown space is fairly new to the neighbourhood but fits right in as if it’s been a local staple for years. The lofty ceilings, green accents, and open concept kitchen brings the modern decor together with cultural warmth. Oh, and the hospitality? Well, it’s unparalleled.
La Mezcaleria has recently launched a Happy Hour every Tuesday-Sunday, from 3PM-6PM at both the Commercial Drive and Gastown locations. For more information, and to make reservations, please visit www.lamezcaleria.ca.
