There’s no season for feminist music – we know that singing truth to power happens all year long. But if there ever was a time to stay in and watch music videos, autumn is a good time to start. Here are the artists (and their recently released music videos) we’re digging this month.

Una Mey

We’ve all heard the question – Can you truly love someone without loving yourself? Well, 22-year-old songstress Una Mey’s “Keep You Close” is all about reaching a place in your life where romantic encounters are no longer a means of escape. Mey sings, “Time to love inwards, love is not linear, we ebb and flow, I choose to keep you close.” Watch it now.

Biawanna

Biawanna (pronouns: they/them/their) is the moniker of R&B/Pop artist/producer/multi-instrumentalist, who is of Fijian and German descent. Continuously inspired by their family and heritage, Biawanna chose their name in honour of their indigenous Fijian/Soloman roots and great great grandmother, the matriarch of the Solomon Islands. Listen to their latest release, “Issues,” here.

“I wrote ‘Issues’ after a break up. It was therapeutic for me to put it into a song. In retrospect this song is about the unfairness of putting physical/emotional support solely on one partner to the point of codependency. It’s about taking responsibility for the only thing you can change in a relationship, yourself,” says Biawanna.

Kimmortal

This video follows Kimmortal as they fight the oppressive structures that haunt them. Using the superhero strength and empowerment of the Sad Femme Club, Kim and the Club are able to defeat the Structure, and find inner strength and beauty.

winter youth

Winter Youth (formerly known as Little Crow) is sharing the official music video for new single “Strangers,” off of the band’s debut album, Home. “Strangers” is shot as a metaphorical, creative, horror film, showing the members covered in blood as the video progresses, the blood representing the emotional damage a relationship can cause when it begins to fall apart. As moments between the two become more disconnected, more blood appears. This video is one of 10 music videos that will be released for Winter Youth’s album, each video continuing to tell a story that relates to the other.
