Between the Women’s March on Washington and the cathartic and connective Me Too movement, sisterhood seemed to be the theme for 2017. Luckily for us, that theme seems to be cropping up in the Vancouver music scene, too. Here are a few women in music who are giving all new meaning to strength (and damn fine talent) in numbers.
Hollow Twin
Moody, soulful, poignant, haunting. Dark-folk duo, Hollow Twin, has been described as all of the above. The Vancouver-based band is fronted by Emmalee Watts and Becky Wosk who bonded over their old souls and love of classic music (Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, Heart). The two have been making music together since 2012 and have opened for bands such as Repartee, The Darcy’s, Miss Quincy, Skye Wallace and more. They release their sophomore EP, The River Saw Everything, by kicking off the party at The Biltmore Cabaret on Friday, January 26. Doors at 7pm with guests Little Crow and Porteau.
Fionn
Loose Lips first caught Fionn’s Alanna and Brianne Finn-Morris at a Fleetwood Mac storytelling event, where the 19-year-old twins executed covers of “Gold Dust Woman” and “The Chain” with heartfelt precision. The girls’ folk-pop sound is punctuated by “the sort of telepathically tight vocal harmonies that only siblings could deliver.” Their lyrics reflect the raw emotion of youth, but are delivered with a sharpness and wisdom that suggest they’re far beyond their years. With 604 Records and mentor Louise Burns behind them, you’d be a fool not to keep an eye on what the twins are up to this year.
I M U R
To point out the biggest “duh” of this century, you don’t have to be a female to uplift the sisterhood. Vancouver-based electro R&B trio IMUR is fronted by Jenny Lea, with Mikey J Blige and Amine Bouzaher keeping the vibe alive. The trio stepped out during the Whistler Film Festival with help of Music BC and have snagged spots in the music lineups of Shambhala Music Festival, World Ski & Snowboard Festival, Astral Harvest, Center of Gravity, and Rifflandia. Expect to find them in the unlikeliest of places next: the Vancouver Short Film Festival, for which their music video for “Swirl” has been selected.
Kristi Alexandra is an unabashed wino and wannabe musician. Her talents include drinking an entire bottle of cabernet sauvignon, singing in the bathtub, and falling asleep.
