Vancouver’s annual Eastside Culture Crawl kicks off its 20th year today, showcasing local artists, designers and crafters in a four-day open-door festival.

For two decades, the festival has been a self-led walking tour that spans the neighbourhoods between Columbia Street, First Avenue, Victoria Drive and the waterfront. This year, the culture crawl is bringing more than 25,000 visitors to 518 artists and their studios, along with a few special highlights.

Loose Lips has rounded up some components to watch out for from Nov. 17 to 20.

As The Crow Flies: 20th Anniversary Exhibit

To celebrate its 20th Anniversary, the Eastside Culture Crawl Society is mounting a multi-venue salon-style exhibition titled As The Crow Flies. This exciting event features work from 70 artists who have participated in the Culture Crawl over the last 20 years.  Juried by Paul de Guzman, Eri Ishii, and Katsumi Kimoto.

Moving Art 2016

‘Circling’ is the title of this year’s fourteen-minute montage of videos and films. Eight films by six filmmakers circle visually and metaphorically throughout this series. From the development of a painting to a spinning chair then through a window to repeated thoughts we are lead to an existential placement of a man continually waving. These are followed by three stop-motion animations and the final film, a collage circling over a lake. The films this year move with action, behaviour, thought and ideas; all are memorable. The films these will be exhibited at Strange Fellows Brewing (1345 Clark Drive) from noon to 11 p.m. each day of the Crawl.

Live Chainsaw Carving

Look out for Vancouver Stump Artist Jesse Toso carving pieces of wood into one of a kind pieces of art using chainsaws with one hour demonstrations.

You can find this attraction outside Töso Wood Works, Studio #101 at the northwest corner of 1000 Parker Street by the railroad tracks. The demonstrations will be happening Saturday, November 19 and Sunday, November 20 3 – 4pm.

Stained Glass Demos

Stained Glass artist Corinne Leroux will be doing demos on how to build stained glass sun-catchers throughout the Crawl weekend in her studio space at MakerLabs (780 E Cordova St – 2nd Floor), happening continually over the course of the weekend.

SnackArt Vending Machine

The SnackArt Collective’s #eastvan vending machine is back!  You can find it on the 2nd floor of 1000 Parker Street. The SnackArt vending machine is an interactive presentation of digital photographs printed in limited editions and made available to the public in snack-sized, consumable pieces.
