Where Off The Tracks Espresso Bar & Bistro (1363 Railspur Alley)

Neighbourhood Granville Island

Hair of the Dog Bailey’s Americano ($6.25) or the Kahlua Mocha ($8.25). Both made with fine espresso fit for the most discerning of coffee snobs, with the extra alcoholic kick needed on a Sunday morning.

What we ate In a word: everything. The Breakfast Bowl filled with house-made cilantro vinaigrette, spinach, kale, black beans, fire-roasted salsa, a grilled tomato, and fresh sliced avocado ($10, plus $2 for eggs); The Granville Island Special with two eggs, bacon, toast, and savoury kale hash ($9.99); the Honey Bee Biscuit with slivered almonds and slices of baked brie drizzled with honey ($6.50). We also snacked on a raspberry black pepper white chocolate biscotti, a spiced cranberry oatmeal cookie & chocolate chip cookie fresh from the oven, and a slice of the carrot cake.

What we loved The bistro is tucked away on Railspur Alley, making it accessible only by foot. Sunlight streams through the southwest facing, loft-style eatery at just-about-brunch-time, giving it a bright, warm ambiance. All pastries are made daily by pastry chef and manager, Olivia (last name). Housemade jam on top of the Honey Bee Biscuit—divine, we do say—makes for an all-around inimitable dish.
