A quaint shop front with experimental Asian comfort cuisine, Heritage Asian Eatery debuted its weekend brunch on March 4. Now open at 10 am on Saturdays and Sundays, the 40-seat dinette is headed by chef Felix Zhou.
Where: Heritage Asian Eatery (1108 West Pender)
Hair of the dog: No booze yet, but cure that queasy weekend morning stomach with a fizzy Yuzu Soda ($4). Used prominently in Japanese and Korean cooking, this Asian citrus fruit syrup mixed with soda water is the spicy pick-me-up your hungover Saturday or Sunday.
What we ate: To start, we were served up palate-whetters such as the Deep Fried Cauliflower ($5) and the Green Onion Pancake with Duck Roll ($6). The contrasting flavours were a casual canape for what would be the restaurant’s main attractions.

We dug in, respectively, to the Shiitake Mushroom Benny Bowl ($13) and the Lamb Benny Bowl ($15). Eggs poached to perfection, served atop golden squares of shredded hashbrowns, and alongside a simple salad with slivered radishes, carrots, and a vinaigrette dressing. These hearty dishes will have brunchers coming back for more.

We finished off with the Golden Mantou with Matcha Condensed Milk ($6) and a Lemongrass Ginger-infused Coconut Pudding with Blueberry ($7).

What we loved: The soft and sweet Golden Mantou recalls tastes of the Bayou with its beignet-like texture, dripping in Asian flavour with the syrupy-sweet matcha condensed milk to dip. If nothing else, we’ll be back for this saccharine snack.
