Weekend Getaway: Whistler’s Pangea Pod

If you’re from BC, then you know the resort town of Whistler needs no introduction. Heading up the Sea-to-Sky highway means you’re getting away in search of sun, snow, the great outdoors, and/or Whistler’s world renowned mountain, Whistler Blackcomb. In short, there’s no shortage of activities you can do in this coast mountain town—paddleboard on Alta Lake, hike to public art piece Function Junction, ride horses, snowboard, ski… the list goes on. Finding an affordable place to stay? Well, that’s a little more difficult.

Enter Pangea Pod, Canada’s first-ever pod hotel. Partly inspired by the capsule hotels of Tokyo, Pangea Pod finds itself halfway between a hotel and a hostel. Located in the heart of Whistler Village, Pangea Pod Hotel is the perfect spot for millennials in search of a social vibe, cheap digs, and a private (ish) slumber. The cost ranges based on the season, from as little as $56.05 and as high as $189.05.

Sleep

…in one of the hotel’s 88 independent sleeping pods. The cozy, private wood-lined pods are complete with artwork and mirrors. The most comfortable sleep can be attributed to the double memory-foam mattresses and a white-noise generating built-in fan. While complete privacy is just behind the shade of a rolling curtain, take solace in your pod’s lockable cabinet in which to store electronics, passports and the like. Just don’t forget your own padlock!

Eat

in The Living Room, a more stylish answer to a hostel’s common area or kitchen. It’s a combination of a lounge, bar, restaurant, and café, and boasts floor-to-ceiling windows that look over the Whistler Village Stroll. They serve up breakfast sandwiches, yogurt and berries, and café-style espresso in the morning; healthy beet salads, bistro-style sandwiches on gourmet breads, and flatbreads in the afternoon, adding charcuterie boards in the evening. You don’t need to leave the living room for a great meal, with individual tables placed neatly around the espresso bar, and a family-style long-table closer to the kitchen.

“We do a few things, and we do them well,” says co-founder Russell Kling, “but if someone’s looking for an excellent Pad Thai or something of the kind, I’ll give them directions on where to go.”

Drink

…on the rooftop patio, Whistler’s only true rooftop bar. It gives imbibers a bird’s eye view of Mountain Square. We indulged in Pangea’s Rooftop Iced Tea, a non-alcoholic hibiscus blend unique to Pangea Pod, between sipping on the bar’s signature cocktails.

Do

We mean, Tourism Whistler pretty much has this one covered.

Whatever you plan to do, however, you’ll benefit from taking advantage of The Toy Box. It’s an open-plan secure storage area for skis, snowboards, mountain bikes, and other gear, created with the needs of equipment-laden outdoor enthusiasts in mind.
