The ladies behind Ellebox Co started their business with one simple question: what do women really need? The monthly necessity for feminine hygiene products was the obvious answer.
Taran Ghatrora, the mastermind behind the trio of ladypreneurs, was procrastinating with a podcast while attempting to study at her U.K. law school.
The podcast she was listening to was about a man who had quit his job as a lawyer to sell a new type of gourmet bacon to monthly subscribers. The concept is akin to the Men’s Shave Club, which sends men personalized shaving supplies orders every month.
Ghatrora took the idea for this ingenious convenience and presented it to her sister Bunny Ghatrora and friend Jessica Bilmer.
A tampon delivery service was born.
Since officially launching in January 2016, Ellebox Co has supplied their subscription service for women in all 10 Canadian provinces, the Northwest Territories, the Yukon, and select American states. Partial proceeds are donated to local women’s health initiatives.
In that time, their business model has grown from a spur of the moment idea to a valued necessity for women across the rural areas of Canada.
“Interesting enough, when we started we envisioned it to be geared towards busy women in big cities like Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, who would want the service at their doorstep waiting to go,” said Bunny.
“Then as we did some promotion and our name got out there, we realized that almost 60 per cent of our customers are from rural areas across Canada. One of our customers is from Clarksdale, Newfoundland and there [are] 1,200 people in that town. The nearest general store is 25 minutes away. The weather there is terrible and they are always being hit by storms during the winter time.”
Ellebox offers a basic care package or organic and chemical-free options, fully stocked with pads, tampons and a choice of milk or dark chocolate and two self-care products, including coffee scrubs and candles.
The self-care products are carefully selected from local B.C. vendors that are often chemical- and cruelty-free.
“It’s been very cool, because the companies that we have partnered with have really grown with us,” said Bilmer.
“It gives these brands and small businesses more opportunities to get their items into the hands of customers across Canada. And a lot of our customers will get products that aren’t only for feminine hygiene but added products that are good for their bodies. Like Capilano’s tea that has iron and detoxifying properties. It’s a win-win on both sides,” said Bunny.
There are three box options: necessities, comfort, and organic. You can choose different variations according to your cycle timeline, number of pads and tampons needed, and your flow.
