Skill Set: New West Workshops

As the old adage goes, you should keep three hobbies in life: one to make you money, one to keep you fit, and one to keep you creative. In New Westminster, there’s no shortage of all that. With workshops often held at Old Crow Coffee Co. or take home craft kits found at Brick & Mortar, there’s plenty to do to add to your portfolio of talents.

Forage and Lace

Inspiring awe-worthy and Pinterest levels of minimalist envy, Forage and Lace weavings have been showing up on Instagram feeds and in hip local flea markets for just under one year. Anyone who’s even mildly interested in 1970s, bohemian home decor may have heard murmurings about the Fraser Valley-based, crafty femme. Owner and creator Lindsey Lee will be hosting her own small wall hanging weaving workshop at Old Crow Coffee Co on February 5. $85

To sign up, contact Lee at forageandlace@gmail.com.

Paint and Sip Night

Hosted at the inimitable 100 Braid Street (also home to many local artists who rent spaces here, as well as the weddings and events hosted in the unique building), Paint and Sip night brings in master artists to lead a class of aspiring Van Gogh’s to paint along with them while enjoying libations and appies. Find out what motif is on the docket next at 100 Braid Street’s Eventbrite page.

Karma Yoga

If there ever was a hobby to keep you both fit and humble, Karma Yoga is it. Located at 28 Sixth Street, Karma Teachers New West is pleased to provide FREE-or-by-donation yoga and meditation classes in service to the community. Their certified yoga teachers offer a variety of classes suitable for all levels. Everyone is welcome, and no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Get flexible.

Cinder & Honey

Think embroidery is just for Grandmothers? Think again. Cinder & Honey, also known as New Westminster’s artsy Caitlin Benson, has been supplying lovers of hoop embroidery on the internet via her Etsy page and locals alike at the Brick & Mortar boutique.
